Steps towards a new life: Venezuelan migrant recalls the road to integration in Brazil

Motivated by the search for new opportunities in a new country, Eucaris and her two daughters, Emma and Luisciandrys, crossed the Brazilian border with the vision of a new life. The starting point was the Venezuelan city of El Tigre, in the state of Anzoátegui, bound for Chapecó, in Santa Catarina.

"I worked as a saleswoman, independently, in Venezuela. But I didn't have a stable income. That's when I decided to come to Brazil. It was the first time I had left my country.. I was a bit excited," confesses Eucaris.

The journey to reach Pacaraima, the Brazilian town on the border between the two countries, was a milestone for her and her daughters. "We went through some challenges, we walked for a long time and during the pandemic, we had this extra worry to deal with. We were very careful when we left, especially for the health of my daughters," she recalls.

In Brazil, the three went to Manaus, in the state of Amazonas, and received support from Operation Welcome, a humanitarian response of the Federal Government to the migratory flow of Venezuelans. As part of the migration regularization process supported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), they learned about the Interiorisation Strategy and the possibility for vulnerable Venezuelan migrants and refugees to have support to go to other cities in Brazil on a voluntary basis.

"I attended a briefing on the strategy at the Internment and Selection Post in Manaus and was curious about the process. I received guidance from IOM staff and, as I have family and friends in Chapecó, I was able to start the travel arrangements," she says.

Through internalization, Eucaris will make the trip in the modality of Social Encounter, where she will meet her long-time friend Julliaan, who also voluntarily participated in the travel process through the Signposted Employment Offer, arriving in the city of Catarina with a job opportunity.

With the trip to the South, the dream of reuniting with other family members who are in Brazil motivates Eucaris to remain firm in the goals of starting a new life. "My dream is to see my mother again. I'm going to have new opportunities, I'm just thinking about securing a job and having stability so that my daughters can have a better life," she added.
